PHARMACY UNIT

INTRODUCTION

The pharmacy unit is the section of the university health services that is charged with all pharmaceutical care needs of students ,staff and families of the university, other patients [clients] who choose U.H.S as his/her primary provider under the health insurance scheme as well as other neighboring communities that may require her services.

 The unit now has a similar outfit at the Kongo campus since the year 2006. The pharmacy unit at main campus at present comprises of a general dispensing room, a compounding room, a pharmacy store, the Chief pharmacist’s office and an N.H.I.S pharmacy office. The Kongo campus comprise of the general dispensing room and a store.

 The unit is charged with the following:

  1. dispensing prescriptions to in- and outpatients
  2. keeping the prescription records as required by law
  3. preparing quality control of extemporaneous medicaments such as mixtures , lotions, syrups, ointments and creams
  4. providing relevant counseling to patients
  5. maintaining the store and keeping relevant inventory and records of drugs in the stores
  6. controlling and issuing of drugs to other units
  7. ensuring proper storage of drugs in the health services
  8. enlightening other health personnel on drug information
  9. Training pharmacy students on I.T.F and other pharmacy aids like pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants.
  10. Organize and coordinate  clinical meetings of medical representatives from companies and health care workers
  11. Liaising and linking with sister pharmacy departments like ABUTH Shika for  cooperative and effective service delivery to the benefits of the patients

Both the Main and Kongo campus units are currently running two shifts with the pharmacists on duty on 24-hour .calls.

STAFFING

The pharmacy unit has altogether fourteen staff member consisting of four pharmacists, three pharmacy technicians, three pharmacy assistants, three pharmacy clinical attendants and a cleaner. A pharmacist and two pharmacy technicians are in the Kongo unit while others are in the main campus.
