
Invitation To Bid For The Supply Of Laboratory Equipment
The Federal Government of Nigeria with the support of the World Bank through the Federal Ministry of Education is funding some students/staff research projects in Ahmadu Bello University under the Innovators of Tomorrow (IOT) component of the Science and Technology Post-Basic (STEP-B) Project.
To support the implementation of this project, the Ahmadu Bello University STEP-B Project Office hereby invites eligible bidders to submit sealed bid for the supply of the equipment, soft wares and consumables listed in the Step-B Website: www.abu.edu.ng.
Brochures, catalogues and manufacturers specifications of all quoted items should also be sent in separate envelopes along with the bids. All bids should be submitted to the Project Officer within One week of the appearance of this advertisement.

The Federal Government of Nigeria with the support of the World Bank is currently implementing a Science and Technology Education at the Post Basic (STEP-B) level Project. The objectives of STEP-B are to improve the quality, equitable access to, and relevance of Science and technology education at the Federal post basic level of education so as to increase the country’s competitiveness in a global world economy. The vision underlying the STEP-B Project is to support the emergence of a strong Science and Technology-led economic growth for Nigeria. The project aims to achieve this impact by strengthening the capacity of Federal Tertiary and Secondary Institutions in the area of Science and Technology.

Ahmadu Bello University responded to the call for Research Proposal by submitting 19 proposals from 14 Departments across 5 faculties. The proposals were submitted on 31st March, 2008 at the Step ‘B’ Project Secretariat in Abuja.
In May, 2008, the Project Secretariat announced that 4 out of the 19 proposals had been approved for funding to the tune of $1.2 million.

Project Officers
The Project Secretariat further directed the University to appoint project Officers to administer the projects. Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor appointed the following officers to handle the project.
An office space has been earmarked at the Centre for Biotechnology Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,to serve as the Step ‘B’ Project Office in Ahmadu Bello University.

After series of workshops organized for the Project Officers to intimate them with the conduct of their assignment; and the signing of performance agreement document, the World Bank gave “No Objection” for the release of N58,500,000 only to implement the first trenche of the approved proposals. The cheque was received on Wednesday 10th September, 2008; and its currently being processed.

Meanwhile, the Project teams have been directed to generate their respective work plan and liaise with the Procurement Officer to develop the procurement plan for implementation. The first tranche of the fund is expected to be utilized within 3 months.
Subsequent disbursement of other tranches will be dependent on successful retirement of this tranche and others.
It is also pertinent to state here that the University also submitted 19 proposals under the INNOVATORS OF TOMORROW AWARD of the Step ‘B’ Project, out of which the following two proposals have been approved for funding:
