Surgery and Medicine

Special Projects/Programmes

The Veterinary Surgery and Medicine Department was established at the inception of the faculty in 1964. It offers courses to Veterinary students at various levels of their undergraduate and postgraduate training.  The department also coordinates the teaching of clinical students in Large Animal Practice and Small Animal Practice.

The Veterinary Surgery and Medicine Department, in addition to its teaching laboratories and clinics, has developed specialized laboratories for research and diagnostic services.  These specialized laboratories are:

Services

Tuberculosis diagnosis
The departmental tuberculosis lab. serves as a Diagnostic Center for the Kaduna State TB and leprosy Control Program. This lab. has recently been designated a regional TB centre.

Call Duty
Departmental staffs (academic, technical and drivers) participate in the call duty program being coordinated by the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Clinic Services
The synergy between the Veterinary Surgery and Medicine Department and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital is such that while staffs of the department render clinic services in addition to teaching, staffs of the hospital also partake in teaching several departmental courses.

Staff computerization project
The department has successfully concluded a computerization program for all clinical academic staff. This is preparatory to our desire to improve the quality of student instruction by employing multimedia in teaching as well as ensure staffs are up to date by being internet users.

Departmental library project
The department has initiated the development of a clinical study/library. Whereas some of the inputs are at hand, the department is earnestly sourcing for additional funds to accomplish this task.

Departmental power supplementation project
The almost total paralysis and inability of the department to meet up with deadlines due to the enormous teaching load and unreliability of power supplied was addressed by the acquisition of a12 KVA generator. This has also facilitated the conduct of student surgery practical which hitherto has been a nightmare for the instructors.

Departmental committees
To ensure collective participation in departmental programs, 14 departmental committees were set up.
