Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology

Background

Head of Dept - Dr. O. J. AjanusiThis was the only Department established by the ABU/RUU/DITA agreement. The cooperation was terminated on 15th October, 1975. The Department is broken into three major sections each with a sectional head: Helminthology section (Dr. O.J. Ajanusi); Protozoology section (Dr. I.A. Lawal) and Entomology section (Pro. R.I.S. Agbede). The current Head of Department is Dr. J. O.  Ajanusi

The Department has an enviable collection of teaching materials and efficient audio-visual system. In community service, the department has been recognized for its contribution to the control of livestock parasites by the federal and State Governments. Its expertise has been drawn upon by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), Organization of African Unity’s Scientific and Technical Research Committee (OAUSTRC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Increase research contributions by staff of knowledge led to an international collaborative project on ticks and tick-borne diseases in Nigeria with the State University of Utrecht. That was financed by the European Economic Communities (EEC). Another collaborative project on control of tsetse and trypanosomosis in Nigeria was undertaken 1988-1995.
