Faculty of Law

Historical Background

Entrance to faculty buildingThe Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University was one of the founding academic units when the university was established in October 1962. Prior to that date, Faculty’s nucleus – the Legal Department of the old Institute of Administration- trained the first set of Lawyers in the then Northern Region, such lawyers completed their training in one of the Inns of Courts in England. Thus the Faculty has thousands of its Dean of Law -

alumni occupying prestigious positions in all the states of the Federation. For instance virtually all the Chief Judges of the Northern States, some Presidents of the Court of Appeal and even at the country’s apex Court (the Supreme Court) received their LL.B from the Faculty. The Faculty therefore has provided training to many Justices – including some former Chief Justices of the Federation, Presidents of the Court of Appeal, many Senior Advocates of Nigeria, many High Court and Federal High Court Judges and Chief Judges across the country.

It is therefore not an empty boast to say with all modesty that the Faculty of Law of Ahmadu Bello University ranks among the most prestigious and the most widely known in the West African sub-region. It certainly ranks most favorably among its peers in the first generation Universities in Nigeria.

As one of the oldest Faculties in the country therefore, the Faculty of Law has a rich heritage of several thousands of graduands, who are spread all over the world.
