Synopsis Of The Activities
There is a vast amount of services and activities to be found in the UHS.
At the Management Level the main activities are of coordination, staffing, budgeting and monitoring to enable the services both at curative and preventive care, and advice the University on all health related matters.

Student’s Emergency Referral Voucher
With more attention was focused to student health care, a student emergency referral voucher to ABUTH was established in 1997. Any student referred to ABUTH is now attended too immediately and payment of the bill is subsequently made through the Student Affairs Division. So all emergency cases of students referred to ABUTH are now attended to without delay and payment of the bill is subsequently made by the University. (Similar effort to extend the same to staff was not successful). The major problem in the implementation is the unavailability of prescribed drugs at the teaching hospital. However such students are allowed to get the drugs from UHS pharmacy.
Eligibility & Cost Coverage (For Students)
All part-time and full-time students at ABU are welcome to use our services. We accept all National Health Services Plan.International students and others who do not have medical insurance that will cover them during the entire period of stay in Nigeria are required to apply for enrolment in the Ahmadu Bello University Health Services Plan immediately upon their arrival in Nigeria.
International students can enrol in a three month private medical insurance plan until they become eligible for the Ahmadu Bello University Services Plan. This coverage is for three months, during which time they become eligible for Nigeria National insurance Scheme. Pre-existing medical conditions are often not covered by private medical insurance plans.
We are a drop-in clinic. No appointment is necessary if you want to see a doctor or a nurse. Appointments are required for specialists only. Patients are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. Of course, emergencies will take priority. Waiting time depends on how busy we are at Health Services. Most of the time patients do not wait longer than 20 minutes but, just in case, bring a book or something to help pass the time.

Health Education
We carry a variety of pamphlets, videos and additional resources on most prominent health concerns of today. Throughout the year we sponsor various seminars, presentations and activities related to student health needs. Come out and join us! Or take a look at our self-help information online.Allergy Injections
Students bring their serum to Health Service where one of our nurses administers the injection. Students are required to remain in the clinic for 20 to 30 minutes following the injection. (This is a safety precaution so that help is available should an adverse reaction occur.)Birth Control And Emergency Contraception
The doctors and nurses of Health Service provide counseling and education on the various forms of birth control. Your physician will help you choose the best alternative for you. Emergency Contraception can prevent a pregnancy when used soon after a single act of unprotected intercourse or following failure of a birth control devise (e.g. the condom breaks). Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP), previously known as the Morning After Pill (MAP), can be taken up to 72 hours (the sooner the better) following intercourse.Contraceptive Sales
Contraception and emergency contraception that have been prescribed by physicians within our clinic can be purchased at a reduced cost. Unfortunately we cannot fill prescriptions from outside sources, but you can see one of our staff doctors to have the prescription transferred.Diagnostic Facilities and Testing
Ahmadu Bello University Medical Laboratories operates an on-site lab in Health Service, where most common diagnostic tests (blood, urine, swabs and electrocardiographs or ECG's) are done. For other diagnostic procedures, students are referred to facilities off campus. Test results are reported to Health Service staff. During the academic year, an average of 500 tests is processed each day. Therefore, our policy is: "No news is Good news," that is, we only notify students of abnormal results.
ALL students with ABNORMAL test results are telephoned or notified by mail.
Test processing can take from one (1) to more than 30 days, depending on the procedure. Our lab technician can tell you approximately when to expect notification, if there is an abnormal result. The lab technician cannot give results. If after the appropriate waiting time, you do not receive a call or a mailed notice, and you wish to review your test results, you can Drop-In to see the nurse (mornings are the best time).

Dressing Changes
Students who require dressing changes, but wish to remain on campus during the day can have their dressings changed by our nurses. Please call in advance to check the best time of day to reduce your waiting time.Eating Disorder Counselling And Education
Abnormal eating, eating disorders and being overweight are not simple issues to address or resolve. If you are concerned about your eating behaviour, or the eating behaviour of a friend or family member, or if you have questions about weight, speak to a health professional. Help is available - click here for more information.Immunizations and TB Testing
Routine immunization schedules change from time to time. It is therefore important to review your immunization record regularly. Annual TB testing is recommended as part of physical examinations. Those who are in high-risk categories (e.g. students or members of the health professions or those traveling in areas where TB is endemic) are particularly vulnerable, and are strongly advised to have annual TB testing. Speak to one of the nurses about your immunization schedule. There is also no charge for TB testing; we also provide some vaccinations Free of charge. There is no charge for:- Diphtheria
- Polio
- Tetanus
- Mumps
- Rubeola (measles)
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B vaccine used to be free at UHS (Some charge is due now).
Men's Health
Health Service staff address the unique aspect of men's health. This includes, but is not limited to sexual and reproductive health care and education on topics such as sexually transmitted infections, testicular self-examination, sexual performance, contraception counseling, nutritional and body image issues. All men are advised to have an annual physical examination.Pregnancy Support
Pregnancy is a major life event. We provide support for those who think they may be pregnant, as well as health education and resources for those who are. In addition, there is a lot of support for student parents on campus and in the community. In collaboration with the Family Care Office, we have prepared a checklist for student parents. Click on the address below to access the list, then follow the steps provided and you will be well prepared for balancing your studies and parenthood.Smoking Cessation
If you smoke at all, or are the friend or family of a smoker, visit http://www.LeaveThePackBehind.org If you are even thinking about quitting, read our pamphlets; and ask our staff about the various smoking cessation programs available.(We even have pamphlets to give to your friends).Travel Immunizations And Education
Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Health Service is a designated Health Medicine Clinic. As such it offers a complete travel immunization and education program. The travel immunization and education program takes longer than the time allocated for a drop-in appointment, so travel appointments must be booked in advance. Travel appointments are quite complex and sometimes require more than one visit - so start early! Students are seen by a number of practitioners in a complex pattern which the staff at Health Service call "the Travel Medicine Shuffle" - see below for details - and, please be patient. In preparation for your visit, if you are travelling for academic purposes, bring a note from your professor. Whether you are travelling for academic purposes or for pleasure you will need your travel itinerary and your immunization records.
When students arrive at reception, they are given a travel itinerary form to complete. Students will then visit the nurse to review the information provided, including when they will be visiting each location, and their past immunization history.
On the basis of information provided, the nurse prepares a personalized immunization and education program. Students are then given information on travel safety, based on their individualized needs. They then visit with the physician and possibly the lab technician before returning to the nurse to begin their immunizations.
While some students may receive all their immunizations in that initial visit, sometimes there are too many vaccines to be given on a single visit, and some vaccines require a series of injections given over a defined time period (some require a six month period). Therefore, please begin the travel immunization process as early as possible, so that all required immunizations can be completed before your departure date.
Travel immunizations and education are no longer covered by OHIP. (Please see above for routine immunization information.) If you are traveling as part of your academic program there is no charge for the development of the personalized program, provided you bring a note from your professor to verify this at the time of the visit. As Health Service is a designated Travel Medicine Clinic, we are required to follow protocols, only students with notes can be exempt from standard fee schedules. There is no charge for immunization forms required by the university, other educational institutions or hospitals.
To assist students who are traveling for other than academic work, we provide travel education and immunizations at a subsidized rate of $35.00 for the development of the personalized immunization schedule and education plus the cost of the specific immunizations you require.
This fee is paid only once to us. If you begin your travel shots with a family doctor or other clinic that does not offer full travel service and then have to be sent on to us, you will have to pay our fee as well as theirs. Thus we do recommend that you do your full work-up here where we can provide all related services for the one fee.
Women's Health
Health Service staff address the unique aspects of women's health through care and education. This includes, but is not limited to topics such as contraception services, breast self-examination education, emergency contraception, menstrual concerns, pregnancy testing, sexually transmitted infection testing treatment and education, and sexual assault prevention and care. All women are advised to have an annual physical examination, called a well women check. In addition to the other components of a general physical exam, cancer prevention is a particular focus in well woman checks.
All women who have ever had sexual intercourse and those who are taking birth control pills, should have a pap test once a year - should further investigation be warranted, students may be advised to return for a further diagnostic test known as colposcopy.
Breast examination and teaching of breast self examination as well as safer sex and contraceptive counselling are also components of these visits.
