Mission

The Department as an educational institution is designed for training of professionals with the required skills, knowledge and motivation in pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical services. The department has the following missions

1.To train students and ensure an equitable distribution of well trained graduates devoid of racial, ethnic, regional and religious backgrounds.

2.To develop a centre of excellence for pharmacognosy and traditional medical education with the view of providing, developing and promoting high level education
3.To develop postgraduate education by promoting research in areas of Natural product and tradtional/herbal medicine sciences relevant to the needs of Nigeria and Africa.
4.To transform the traditional medicine practice in Nigeria by training adequate numbers of Nigerians in the practice of herbal Medicine.

Philosophy

The department is undergoing a re-organisation of its program. The department is planning to introduce two new programs.

1.One year Post graduate Diploma in Herbal Medicine (PGDHM)
2.One year Certificate in traditional Medicine (CTM).

The programs have been formally approved by the Faculty Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences and has been forwarded for approval to the University Senate. Currently the department is aggressively looking for funding sources from stake holders to complement the resources offered by the university. The purpose and educational objectives of the proposed programs include:

1.To promote the practice and awareness of herbal medicine
2.To train students in the theory, methods, and research relating to herbal medicine.
