Brief History
On October 27th 1977, the Faculty Board of Environmental Design sent in a
proposal on the establishment of the Department of Industrial Design to the 37th meeting
of Ahmadu Bello University Senate for its consideration and approval.
This proposal was approved and consequently, the new department was
established in October, 1977 as a composite discipline starting with areas of
specialization as follows:
Textiles Design
Graphics Design
Ceramics Design
Glass Design and Technology
Consequently, a teaching programme for the new department was submitted and approved by the Faculty of Environmental Design at its 39th meeting held on 6th February, 1979, followed by Senate approval for this programme to take effect from the 1979/80 academic session.
In 1985, a Fashion Design Section was added to the existing programme and was of much benefit to textile students in particular. Nevertheless we could not continue with it due to excessive shortage of space, shortage of qualified lecturers, equipment and teaching materials, etc. Funds allocated to the Department was not sufficient to cover the new course.
