Brief History

The Department of Crop Protection is one of the six Departments in the Faculty of Agriculture of the Ahmadu Bello University. The Department was established 1978. The Department is currently organized into two sections, namely; Entomology, and Plant Pathology. The Plant Pathology Section has four research and teaching units, namely; Mycopathology, Phytobacteriology, Plant Virology and Plant Nematology.

The Department also has an Insect Museum that contains a collection of about 70, 000 species of insects as well as a Diagnostic Laboratory and a Culture Room.

The Department of Crop Protection is owned jointly by the Faculty of Agriculture and the Institute for Agricultural Research. Therefore, the Head of Department of Crop Protection and all staff are responsible to both the Dean of the Faculty and the Director of the Institute both of whom are, in turn, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Mission

The Department of Crop Protection Serves both the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) and the Faculty of Agriculture. The primary mission of the Department is to provide a conducive learning environment for quality education and training that promotes scholarship, stimulates innovative research and technology development, consultancy and community service for improved livelihoods and sustainable development in the area of Crop protection and environmental conservation

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department is in tandem with that of the Institute and University, which is to implement the integration of teaching, research and extension in agriculture to solve real and practical problems of crop farming, agribusiness and agro-allied industries.

Registration Guidelines

Registration of students offered provisional admission is done by a Panel in the Faculty to check the following documents:
e. Admission letter
f. Academic Certificates to confirm that the candidate fulfills the University requirements.
g. Candidates’ names should correspond with the names contained on the certificates tendered.
h. Local Government and Area of Origin declaration.
If the Panel is satisfied with the qualifications and the credentials, the Dean of Agriculture and the Admissions Officer will sign the Registration Forms
