Founded: 1928

Brief History

i. 1928 as Shika Stock Farm by the Department of Agriculture of the then Northern Region of Nigeria (to produce selective breeding, male stock for use as stud bulls by native stock owners).
ii. 4th October, 1962 the Station was transferred to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as Shika Grassland Research Station (for sown pastures, animal husbandry and range management).
iii. 27th August, 1973 the Shika Grassland Research Station became “National Animal Production Research Institute” (NAPRI) with Headquarters in Shika. The actual take-off of NAPRI was on 1st July, 1976.

Mission

To conduct demand-driven research and training in animal production and dissemination of technologies to animal producers, processors and marketers in an integrated value-chain system to achieve sustainable employment generation, poverty alleviation and improved livelihood in Nigeria.

Philosophy

The broad national mandate of the Institute is to conduct applied research into all aspects of animal production of all animal species that are of benefit to mankind notably cattle, sheep goats, poultry, pigs, rabbit, camels, donkeys. In other word, NAPRI is to conduct Research in all livestock species including Poultry, Small Ruminants (i.e. Sheep and Goats) forage, Swine and large Ruminants (i.e. cattle)
