Course Outline: Urbanisation: Urban structure; the basic 'Thuen' model; extensions of the basic model - the optimum town, congestion and competition for land; spatial theory of the firm - partial equilibrium theory, equilibrium and efficiency with interdependence; spatial competition and market areas; principles of optimal location; issues in housing; issues in transportation, theory and problems of local public finance, crime, poverty and urban social dynamics. Regional planning: balanced growth theory and the rationale for regional planning. Centre-down development paradigm; macro-spatial development framework for rural-urban relations; growth poles. The experience of Nigeria's planning strategies; trends in regional planning.
