UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES
Nursing Unit
This section of the main sickbay is headed by a Chief Nursing Officer.
It has trained and qualified nurses, with some specializing in various
fields, e.g. a trained community nurse, trained counselors, three
Ophthalmic, five Community Health officers, two psychiatric nurses and
five trained in family planning .There are two Chief Nursing Officers,
seven Assistant Chief Nursing Officers, seven Principal Nursing Offices,
two Senior Nursing Officers and two Nursing Officers.
Other staff on this section of the health team are cleaners,
attendants, care-takers, drivers and the medical records section.
Objectives
- To have an efficient and effective service delivery at an optimal
level in order to eleviate the suffering of our patients who often times
have to scount around looking for drugs and materials for their
treatment.
- To have adequacy and availability of materials to give physical and
psychological relief to both our patients and health service
providers.
There are 23 Nurses who are specialists in various
areas of Nursing i.e.
- General Nursing
- Community Nursing
- Ophthalmic Nursing
- Orthopedic Nursing
- Psychiatric Nursing
- Midwives with family planning providers
- 5 Medical Record clerks
- 4 Clerical Officers
- 12 Clinical Attendants
- 6 Ambulance Drivers making a total of 50 staff under the Unit.
The number may appear large! But they are all working three
shifts, meaning morning, afternoon, and night shifts. The unit comprises
of the following sections or subunits:
1st Subunit
Antenatal clinic and Child Welfare –
Monday to Friday
- Booking – pregnant women – senior staff
- Booking pregnant women – junior staff
- Booking pregnant women married students
- Family planning clinic to all above
- Ophthalmic Nursing care
2nd Subunit
Opthalmic Nursing care - Daily, Monday –
Friday
3rd Subunit
Treatment rooms
- Senior staff and junior staff, family and student treatment rooms
operate daily – Monday – Sunday.
- Cappa House and Tuberculosis Control Unit: Monday – Sunday
4th Subunit
Emergency room with 4 beds. There is also 4-bed section called Cappa
House which was in operation for a while but now put on hold because of
poor facilities such as lighting, lack of water supply and shortage of
manpower.

6th Subunit
Tuberculosis clinic:
This unit is
relatively new. It initially started as an embulatory, but now fully
equipped, however, it still needs to be upgraded in terms of manpower
training and additional equipment.
As mentioned earlier the services
of this health centre goes beyond the University community, but Samaru
and its environs. Therefore we should see it as community based
Tuberculosis Centre.
